Bioremediation is the use of microbes to clean up contaminated soil and groundwater that contain harmful substances. Microbes are very small organisms, such as bacteria, that live naturally in the environment. Bioremediation promotes the growth of certain microbes that use contaminants as a source of food and energy. Contaminants treated using bioremediation include oil and other petroleum products, solvents, and pesticides. (B.1)

What Is Bioremediation?

When Was Bioremediation Created?

Bioremediation began to develop recognition as a commercial application for the environment and pollution in 1972.

Since 1972, Bioremediation has greatly developed as a means of cleaning up spills from gasoline, diesel, heavy metals, and other harmful petroleum products. (B.3)
